A Personal Tribute to My Former Professor,
the First Professor Emeritus of Philosophy in San Antonio History
In 1984, Bro. John Reynolds Totten, S.M. was named the first Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at St. Mary's University and the first in the history of San Antonio. He died on April 28, 2017, at the age of 103 years old and had lived professesed Marianist religious life for 83 years.
During the 1980's, Bro. Totten was my Philosophy professor at St. Mary's University, where he had been teaching since the 1950's. He was a kind and gentle soul, and it was my honor to have him as a teacher. - Andrew Hill
